  • Sugarcreek Cares is sponsoring a Video & Art Contest in conjunction with the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek School District. We will be awarding 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for both the middle school and high school for a total of 6 winners. The contest is open to all 6th-12th grade students who reside in Bellbrook-Sugarcreek. Students do not have to attend BMS or BHS.
  • Submission deadline is February 4 , 2024.  Winners will be announced on February 23, 2024.

Submission Guidelines for Video Contest
You should select a prominent figure in African American history and create a video highlighting their accomplishments and impact. It could be anyone from Simone Biles or LeBron James to Rosa Parks or Malcolm X. Videos are limited to a maximum of 5 minutes. Complete the Google Submission Form, which will include a URL to your video that you have already uploaded to YouTube or TikTok.  Students are encouraged to be creative and submit videos using visual aids or other creative production techniques. Videos should not include the student’s identity since judging will be blind.

Submission Guidelines for Art
You may choose from any visual art format (painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, etc.) to depict one or more prominent figure(s) or a historical moment relevant to Black History or how they impacted you. Complete the Google Submission Form, which includes uploading photographs (JPEG) of your artwork. Artwork should not include the student’s identity since judging will be blind.

Judging Guidelines
Submissions will be judged by a panel made of representatives from Sugarcreek Cares, Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools, The City of Bellbrook, Sugarcreek Township, and the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Chamber of Commerce.  Judges will assess the submission (see Judging Sheet on page 3) in consideration of:

  1. Clarity

  2. Creativity

  3. Craftsmanship

  4. Historical Relevance

Things to Consider
You may choose from a variety of prominent figures from Black history. Once you choose your subject, think about what you want to accomplish as you develop your theme—what message(s) do you want to communicate? What can you do with your subject to inspire those who review your work?

Video Editing Tools

If submitting a video, there are several free video editing tools available for modern desktop computers and mobile phones that may help spice up your submission, allowing you to combine multiple video clips with smooth transitions and accompanying music, as well as overlay pictures. For Apple devices, iMovie is an intuitive video editing tool for simple videos and is provided free from Apple for desktop and mobile. For Windows users, Olive (https://www.olivevideoeditor.org/download.php) and DaVinci Resolve (https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/) are free applications and have Windows and Mac versions.  All have a relatively easy learning curve for older students.  Other students may feel more comfortable using PowerPoint and recording a presentation.  Using PowerPoint, you can record a narration on top of your slide show and add background audio that plays during the presentation.  Above all else, use your imagination (and Google will guide you)!
